The Franklin County (Ohio) Court of Common Pleas—Criminal Division

According to the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas 2009 Annual Report:

The Franklin County Court of Common Pleas in Columbus, Ohio, Criminal Division opened nearly 10,000 new cases in 2009.  A case starts with the filing of either an indictment issued by the Franklin County Grand Jury, an arrest on a criminal complaint and warrant filed in the Franklin County Municipal Court, or older juveniles bound over for trial as an adult. 

Arraignments are held three times a week - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  A duty magistrate or judge presides over arraignments and set the bond for the accused.  Bonds should be posted by 4:00 p.m. for release the same day.  All criminal cases are public records. 

Here is the breakdown for 2009 felonies in Franklin County, Ohio:

1st degree felony - 10%

2nd degree felony - 13%

3rd degree felony - 15%

4th degree felony - 19%

5th degree felony - 34%

Unspecified cases - 8%

There was a 3.5% increase in criminal caseload in 2009 over 2008.

During the first quarter of 2010, 2,440 criminal files were opened of which 2,044 were felonies.  Here is the breakdown for the first quarter of 2010:

1st degree felony - 9.5%

2nd degree felony - 12%

3rd degree felony - 14.5%

4th degree felony - 18%

5th degree felony - 36.5%

2010 is on track to eclipse 2009 in felony caseload.
